It’s National Invasive Species Awareness Week. So, here’s a little recap on what invasives are.
Invasive species are introduced plants and animals that cause harm to the environment, the economy, and/or human health. Often displacing native species, these invaders skew the delicate balance between plants, animals, and important processes like water flow and fire.
In Florida, we have a whole slew of invasive species. Some of our current cold weather has made for interesting headlines for invasives such as cold-stunned iguanas fall out of trees. But normally, it’s not such a laughing matter. Invasive species are destructive and really harm Florida. Here is some more information about invasives. You can also check the IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants for possible invasivity issues of plants in your area.
